Depression

Depression

Depression is a challenging battle to fight and one that you should not have to face on your own. It is important to seek therapy for depression as soon as you start noticing the symptoms so you can work on altering your thoughts to change your mood.

What Is Depression?

Depression is one of the most common mental health issues in America and can severely impact the way we think, feel, and function on a daily basis. While research states depression is caused by a combination of biological, environmental, and psychological factors, it often occurs when we are coping with a stressful life event (i.e. job change, move, loss or death, break-up, etc.) and can show up differently for everyone.

Common Symptoms of Depression

  • Constant feelings of sadness or emptiness
  • Feeling down or hopeless
  • Lack of interest or motivation in daily activities
  • Low energy or fatigue
  • Feelings of guilt, shame, or worthlessness
  • Irritability
  • Difficulty eating and/or sleeping

While some people have been battling depression their entire lives, others describe a recent shift in their mood that is different from the general feeling of happiness they are accustomed to. Whether depression is new for you or not, it’s important to remember that it is common and treatable, meaning you do not have to feel this way forever. The important thing is not to suffer alone and to seek therapy for depression as soon as possible.

Treatment for Depression

Many people find therapy effective for treating depression because it gives them a safe, non-judgmental place to talk about their thoughts and process their emotions. If you’ve recently suffered a loss such as a death of a loved one or a break-up with an ex, grief counseling can be an effective form of support along with family and friends. While some people find comfort and relief in “talk therapy” alone (i.e. talking to a professional whose trained in mental health), others seek therapy to develop tools to help them cope with their depressed mood. Many psychologists in NYC use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)to treat depression and anxiety since the model helps people change the way they feel by altering their negative thoughts. While we can work together to learn techniques to battle your distressed thoughts, we will also explore the reasons behind your low mood and some of the messages you’ve received throughout your life that may be contributing to your depressed mood.

Whether you’re having trouble motivating yourself or you’ve noticed yourself feeling sad more often than usual, please do not hesitate to reach out for support. We will work collaboratively to explore your thoughts and feelings and create a unique treatment plan that will help to achieve your goals for therapy.
